TRYPOPHOBIA

The term Trypophobia originated from the Greek word “trypo” – meaning, boring holes, punching, or drilling – and to“phobia” which means irrational fear towards an object of no harm. In other words, trypophobia is a new and emerg- ing type of phobia referring to the fear of holes such as those of the coral sponge.
Although Trypophobia has not been identify as a official phobia in medical term, it is very common to see people who are afraid clustered of holes. In my project approach, I identify this particular phobia being as an advance form, a physi- cal form that causing disturbance toward being and also the psychological form of this particular group of people who fear of such object.
It is rather interesting to find people who felt disturb looking at this object yet they are still have the urge to look at it. The arrangement of the clustered holes seem to be visually exciting to many, yet on the other hand causing discomfort.

The approach of my project focus on interaction between the users and the product/installation. The ash tray on the dustbin inspired me, it is commonly seen in Singapore that cigarette butts are lying everywhere although there are dust- bin nearby. Ironically Singapore is identify as a clean and green country and restricting more and more area for smoking in the recent years.

I begin with studying the holes and analyze them in term of which “design” of holes are more disturbing. In the development of my project I try out different design of geometric and organic shapes, analysing the twisting of human bodies and simplify it as a free form. o from my finding, I realized that lotus bud and coral sponge are consider the much disturbing design. From my workpiece, I adopted the slight potruding fillet edge of the holes by using the eye- lets to add on to the edge of the metail foil tubes. The reason of choosing metal foil is due to its reflective surface when light converge inward creating a sense of sucking the viewer in.
In conclusion, I wanted to highlight the issue by using free form of the Singapore landscape design an ash tray. The aim of the ash tray is to trigger the visual excitement like the effect of trypophobia to attract the smoker to make them wanted to stuff and and the holes with cigarette butts.
